marketing vs branding

the number one thing i hear from little biz builders is that they are looking for...

  • ways to get their name out there
  • ways to stand out from the competition & get noticed
  • marketing that doesn’t feel icky and pushy
  • marketing ideas that won’t cost a tonne of money
  • new ideas for promoting themselves & their biz
  • the confidence to promote themselves

does any of that sound familiar?

it all boils down to the same thing. we all need to market ourselves and we all need a little help to do so. (i do too! i am looking for new ideas all the time!)

but the thing that many people don’t realize is the marketing starts with branding.

your brand needs to be built first before you build your marketing strategies (just like the foundation of a building comes first). but branding also needs to be there every time you market your biz (it is like the glue that holds all of the pieces of your business together.)

branding & marketing go together, always.

marketing is what you do. branding is what you are.

the quote above is one of my favorite things to say to biz builders because i think, in a way, we are all looking for a magic solution. we want something awesome to just happen.

we want to get some media attention or have a celebrity use our product or have an amazing client just drop into our lap or have a sudden surge of traffic to our site or create the next big thing.

but if you want something awesome to happen you have to be awesome.  click to tweet this

so you need to start with your brand: have absolute clarity about ‘what you are’ so that you can figure out ‘what to do next’.

i love this quote from this article on the difference between marketing & branding….

"Marketing is actively promoting a product or service. It’s pushing out a message to get sales results: “Buy our product because it’s better than theirs.”
brand does not explicitly say “buy me”. Instead, it says “This is what I am. This is why I exist. If you agree, if you like me, you can buy me, support me, and recommend me to your friends.” "

doesn’t that sound exactly like what all want? if we have a strong sense of that, then i think marketing is so much easier! we can feel confident and authentic and not scared to do it and not icky about it when we do.

marketing & branding go hand in hand. don’t forget about one as you work on the other.
