Maybe you’ve heard the money is in the list. Or perhaps you have no idea what the ‘list’ is?
When it comes to online business ‘your list’ refers to a database of email subscribers. People who have given you permission to contact them via newsletter/digest/update/whatever you want to call it.
When growing a business you want to build this list of people and provide them with valuable information that either educates, entertains or informs.
You also want to make offers with the aim of them purchasing a product or service from your business.
Offers and the resultant sales are how your business makes money so don’t be scared to include them.
You are in business right? Not simply a hobby.
So you need a list, how do you convince people to join it?
You have to provide an incentive. Something they value so much they are willing to give you their email address in exchange.
Let’s consider the significance of opt in incentives.
Not having an opt in incentive and still expecting website visitors to hand over their email address is a bit like showing up to a barbeque uninvited, empty-handed and still expecting to be welcome.
Occasionally you might get in the door but not often. Just the same, you might get some opt ins but not as many as you could.

How do you know what will be attractive to your target audience?
1. You need to know who your audience is.
Create an avatar to represent a typical individual you would like to join your list.
What are their characteristics? How do they behave? What are their values and attitudes?
The more detail you add to the avatar, the easier it will be to create an opt in offer that’s highly attractive to them.
You might even want to have someone on Fiverr create a cartoon of your avatar to remind you who you are creating the opt in for.
2. Brainstorm a list of problems or challenges your target audience members face.
List as many ideas as you can. Break large challenges down further and further until you have lots of little challenges.
Now identify one challenge you could help your target audience solve quickly and easily.
3. Create a resource to solve the problem you identified in the previous step.
When you’ve created your resource, set up an opt in box on your website so that your incentive is automatically delivered to your new subscriber.
4. It’s time to promote, promote, promote.
Your target audience members won’t opt in if they don’t know the incentive exists. Identify where your ideal people spend their time online.
Do they prefer one social platform over all others or do they spread their time across the board?
Are there forums relevant to your industry? Events you could promote at?
It’s your responsibility to spread the word.
